Muscle loss associated with aging
Muscle loss associated with aging starts early. From the age of 30, muscle tissue undergoes a slow degeneration of the order of 3 to 8% per decade in favor of fat1. Thus, between 20 and 30 years, musculature represents 30% of body mass and represents only 17% at 70 years. Finally, between 25 and 75 years, muscle mass decreases by half!
When the muscle loss reaches a certain level, it leads to a pathology : the sarcopénie2.
Preserving muscle mass throughout its life and detect muscle loss seem essential to promote successful aging.
